Reading the Results:

The intimidating array of numbers in the table below is not as confusing as may seem at first glance. It is not necessary to assume any significance in the values in each of the cells in this table. It is only neccessary to observe the similarity of the patterns of numbers found in one row compared to the patterns of other rows. The colors are only used to highlight and group the results. Comparing results is analogous to a forensics laboratory matching the scratches on bullets to determine which ones were fired from the same gun. The gun in genealogy is a common ancestor who existed anytime since surnames evolved in England about 800 to 900 years ago.

Why Some Rows are Longer:

This study began with measurements of twelve Y-chromosome DYS markers. These results contained too many ambiguous similarities, not only between participants in this study, but also with results in some other surname studies. The problem is the narrowness of genetic variety in Britain and is evidenced by the numerous light gray cells in the table. The work around solution for this is to look at more markers, and those results are reported in the longer rows. Agreement of 24 out of 25 cells is considered a match. Some participants are expanding to 37 markers to identify branches within a family. Comments on the ancestors of the participants follow the table. Better explanations of the science of Y-Chromosome DNA testing, the meaning of DYS, alleles and repeats, as well as links to other surname studies are available at "Chris Pomeroy's DNA Portal".

Discussion:

This study already demonstrates the Jarman (and variant spellings) surname has multiple origins. Clearly we are not all cousins.

Previous efforts to document connections between Jarmans from American "Tobacco Coast" families have failed. Our DNA study adds no support to any theories connecting one or more of the four families found in Baltimore Co., MD (1539, 58881), Calvert Co., MD (1543, 3689, H1222, 203544), Albemarle Co., VA (1544, 18228), or on the Chesapeake Eastern Shore (1535, 1536, 1537, 1538, 3690, 5793, SMGF03).

The samples from Jarmans of Norfolk (1540), Oxford (6932), Devon (1545 and 5769), Wales (9849), and Westmorland (72124) provide anecdotal affirmation that Jarman geographic distribution in England is not the result of migration by Jarmans with common ancestry.

Our most controversial result is the 18/25 mismatch between the Calvert Co., MD, family represented by sample 1543 and the family of Milton Jarman, born 1854 in Onslow Co., NC, represented by sample 1542.

Not all of our results are negative. Samples 1535, 1536, 1537, 1538, 3690, and 5793 are either 12/12 or 25/25 matches. The four participants from Worcester Co., MD, families are seeking to prove their ancestor was a William Jarman who appeared in the 1670s in Accomack Co., VA, and died about 1709 in Somerset Co., MD. Before our DNA study, the two participants with ancestors in Delaware had no clear documentation of their connection to the Maryland family, but now with new confidence they will be joining their genetic cousins in the hunt for documentation of William Jarman's family. An extra observation to share about the Chesapeake Eastern Shore group is the spelling of their names - four use Jarman and two use German.

More positve results are the 24/25 match between samples 1543 and 3689 thus showing a common ancestor is shared by descendants of Robert Jarman, c1680-1761, of Calvert Co., MD, and the descendants of Asa German who was married 1809 to Elizabeth Barland in Mississippi.

Samples 1544 and 10269 are from great-great-grandsons of two sons of Capt. William Jarman, c1748-1813 (son of Thomas Jarman), of Albemarle Co., VA. Passed down six generations, the tested markers remain unchanged thus providing proof of kinship and verification of the participants' genealogy. Their 12/12 match with a family from Kent, England (16424) offers a hopefull clue for further research in the UK.

A match was expected between the Albemarle Co., VA descendants and a descendant of the family in Audrain Co., MO. Instead, sample 18228 is an 22/25 match with sample 9849 whose ancestors lived in Wales.

Our first international connection is the 11/12 match between participants from Australia and the United States. Their samples 5769 and 6622 reveal a common ancestry exists between Jarman families in parishes south of and well to the north of Exeter, England. Another international connection is the 25/25 match between a 19th century immigrant Indiana, 27637, and a family from Norfolk, England, 1540.

Is JERMY a Variant Spelling?
The Jermy family is conducting its own DNA study. So far the results support the position that Jermy is a separate family. But more samples are needed. The web site for the Jermy DNA Project is at
http://stanfield.und.ac.za/dnaproject.html.

What's Next?:

More participants - Please! We need more Jarman / German / Jermyn / etc. men to join this study. The goal of this project is to help all of us discover our origins by finding more Jarman families that are kindred and others who are not related. We also need to confirm our results within those families already identified. This is an international project and we urge Jarmans in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, America, and anywhere else, to please join us. The company that processes our samples is now offering a discounted price to new customers who join the Jarman / German DNA Project. For more information please return to the project introduction or send an email to the project coordinator at german@jarman.net
