196. David German
David German was born about 1796 in North Carolina. On 19 December 1824 he married Elizabeth A. Worth in Randolph County; William Jarman was his bondsman. Elizabeth A. Worth was born about 1806 in North Carolina. A list of insolvent taxables reveals that David Gearman left Randolph County without paying his poll tax for
1826. David Jarman appeared on a list of hands assigned for 1827 to a road in southeast Guilford County, North Carolina; the overseer was John Rigsby. However, David German's oldest son Lindsey German, who was born in 1827, reported when enlisting in the army that he was born in Rush County, Indiana. Levi Worth purchased land in Rush County that same year. Jehu Rigsby and David German were listed on adjacent lines in the 1830 census of Union County. On 21 November 1832, David Gearman of Shelby County purchased 81.44 acres of government land in southern Sugar Creek Township in western Shelby County. In 1837 he traded the north half of his property for a parcel in the northern part of the township. He sold it 11 months later. On 12 November 1839 he sold the south end of his first tract and moved to Daviess County, Indiana, where he, as well as, John Worth, and Seth Worth were counted in the 1840 census. But David German returned to Shelby County by 1842. During the 1840s and 50s his residence changed repeatedly between Hendricks and Sugar Creek Townships in Shelby County and Clark Township just to the west in Johnson County, Indiana. David German died in Johnson County of bronchitis and indigestion on 21 August 1867. His grave site is unknown and his estate being worth less than $300 passed directly to his widow without administration. Elizabeth (Worth) German died of consumption in her home near Boggstown in Shelby County on 27 November 1886; the funeral services were at the Methodist Church in Boggstown, and she was buried in an unmarked grave in the new Boggstown cemetery.

202. Stephen Jarmon
Several years ago, John B. Cross, a great grandson of Stephen Jarmon
wrote,"...I find from old records and papers as follows,...Stephen
Jarman eldest son of Robt. Jarman was born near Wadesboro, N.C. on the
17th day of April 1792, and at the age of 20 years emigrated with his
father to Tenn. and was for a long time a resident of Humphreys County,
he was a young soldier under his father at New Orleans and helped that
little band of heros defend that city. He moved from Humphreys County
to West Tennesse, where he was the immediate neighbor and intimate
acquaintance of Gen. Ed Burleson of Texas. He was a contemporary and
acquaintance of General Jackson, Houston, Crockett and others of that
period, and belonged to that old style of men of that date. He was an
old backwoodman and spent the best portion of his life amid the hardy
and exciting scene of the frontier, during the late war his sympathies
and active assistance were givin with great liberality, to the south:
and his efforts to assist the confederate cause, remained a mater of
pride and satisfaction to him, upto the closing scenes of life. He
married Miss Eliza Scott with whom he lived for more than fifty years."
(John B. Cross, Whitesville, TN, two typed pages in the Jarman verticle
file at the Tennessee State Library.)
One may suspect Mr. Cross allowed some exageration into his telling of
Stephen Jarmon's life story. Nevertheless, unless otherwise noted, Mr.
Cross's account, harvested from "old records and papers" is the source
used here for information on Stephen Jarmon's descendants.______________________________

210. Asa Jarmon
RESIDENCE: Asa Jarman was in Texas as early as April 1833. At a later
date, in Lamar County, he got into trouble with the law and, "was
charged along with 29 other 'prominent' men for keeping a Faro table.
Unlike the others, Jarman had another problem -- he was in love with a
married lady named Elizabeth Martin. They simply settled matters by
moving from Texas. By 1843, Jarman is living back in his old native
Hardeman County, Tennessee." [This information in letter dated 1 June
1996 from Betsy Mills. She cites: Skipper
Steely, FORTY SEVEN YEARS (Unpublished third proof copy to be published

Library, PJC Campus, in Paris, TX.]SPOUSE: Betsey Mills adds these comments about Elizabeth Martin: "There
are three possibilities concerning Elizabeth Martin. See Steely
Collection, Martin-Bourland File. [In the archives at ETSU, Commerce,
TX] John Martin, 1773-1855, was married to an Elizabeth. Also see
Steely Collection, B. H. Martin File. He married Elizabeth Blythe King
of Sumner County, Tennessee. Martin was born in Albemarle County,
Virginia about 1799, and was a lawyer in Crawford County, Arkansas
before moving to Red River County probably in late 1841. See also Joyce
Martin Murray, Red River County, Texas Deed Abstracts I (Wolfe City,
1986), 54, 55, etc. and Berth Gable (ed.) Red River Collections (Dallas,
1976), 364. The third possible Elizabeth may have been a wife of
Matthew Martin, though lore says he never married.: Bowers, Red River
